Regardless of how you feel about standardized, high-stakes testing, it is the law of the land, and it's not going anywhere any time soon. In elementary schools across the nation, "test prep" means turning classrooms into a place where fun goes to die. Social Studies and Science are generally treated as an optional component of the curriculum, read-alouds are viewed as a rare luxury, and the act of taking mini tests to prepare for another test creates an environment that is counter to the original intentions of the standards-based curriculum movement.

I believe there is a meaningful way to prepare for these tests. I believe laughter has a role in elementary classrooms. I believe publishers should create materials aligned to state standards. And I believe that my books are breathing life, laughter, and learning back into classrooms across the country.

Student Solutions, Inc., (the nonprofit publisher) develops, publishes, and markets these breakthrough materials at a financial loss each year. Books are sold to schools at tremendous discounts, the cost of accounting and staffing dig into an already tight budget, and efforts to donate materials to Boys & Girls Clubs, homeless shelters, and other agencies create a net financial loss that is currently offset by private donations from individuals and charitable foundations. In this difficult economic climate, however, the stability of charitable funding simply cannot be predicted, and the funding we currently receive is only enough to cover general operational expenses, not the type of product and service expansion that we envision. Regardless of how many books I create (and I have an arsenal of ready-to-publish books spanning several series), we cannot send anything to print until funding permits.
